Hi all, I have read your t&c regarding posting here and feel I am within your guidelines.
Obviously you are all doing great things to help people with problems, some very serious, well done for providing a free and annonymous service to these people. My question to you is do you feel that the current law in the US/EU etc is the best way to approach cannabis?
The link between cannabis and mental illness is quite obvious really; if you are at risk then you shouldn't use any intoxicants. I appreciate people may not be aware of their risk and therefore people need to be fully aware of the potential problems when using intoxicants. This link should be fully researched and recognised in the health service. Also the increased risk to younger people which is the reason we have age limits on regulated substances. Would you not agree that cannabis would be better situated in an off-licence with an 18/21 limit, rather than available from 'dan the dealer' down town who doesn't care how old you are? Also that if cannabis was regulated it would have acurate information about its strength on the packaging much like the percentage of alcohol in a bottle?
Surely a good deal of the reason your rehab group is of benifit is because it is annonymous. The law serves to alienate people who smoke cannabis and it means they cannot talk to their doctor about it without worrying about the repercussions. Surely anybody with a health problem should be able to speak to their doctor with confidence that they will help? The law is a major reason why many people with problems hide them from their doctors, family, and friends.
My point here is that I believe prohibition is a good deal of the problem. Personally I smoke in the evenings but I do not have any problems with that, this doesn't mean I think cannabis is perfectly safe; just that for the vast majority of users there are no side-effects. Many people get into trouble with alcohol but this is not a reason to make a pint of beer illegal is it? Also that your job would be a lot easier if we could all speak openly about the subject.
Thank you for reading, I look forward to any replies.
